RIP Big Sunflowers

STeve @ 11:03 am

They have been still standing tall but with bowed heads and died flowers for some time.  At the weekend we decided it was time for them to come down and so we saved the seeds from one head and the others put onto freecycle (and had someone wanting them straight away).    We could have had saved them for feeding the birds but next door feeds the birds already and the mess that it creates is a constant problem for us!

Meanwhile, the smaller multi-headed sunflowers in the front are still doing well.  Certainly a good idea I think.

Baby Sunflower Child

STeve @ 8:51 pm

This is all unexpected.  Tonight I discovered a new small flower on one of the sunflowers which has now flowered and is now looking a bit sad.  Halfway down the stem, a new shoot and a baby sunflower child growing off the side.

w18 sunflowers are grinning

STeve @ 3:22 pm

I suppose these need to be cut down at sometime, save some seed and sort out what to do with the rest.  In the meantime, they give off an uneasy grin….

w17 - Sunflowers at the front

STeve @ 3:45 pm

It’s windy and rainy…. which means the sunflowers at the front are a little bit sideways.  But still, it is always nice to see a sunny sunflower, even more so when it feels like the middle of winter.

“Didn’t they do well?”  I am quite pleased, and now we have a load of massive sunflower heads that I need to cut down and do something with, no doubt save some of the seed for next year.

w15 - Sunflowers in front

STeve @ 4:27 pm

The smaller sunflowers in the front garden seem to have grown rather large and are swamping the small apple tree - whoops.  I suppose in sunflower terms they are still quite small.

Small Sunflower

STeve @ 8:48 pm

Out of all the large sunflowers, there were two that never really grew.  One just seemed to not do anything, while the other one I planted quite late and so I suppose it never really was going to do too much.  But even so, while we have been wowed by the large ones, the small tiny ones have flowered too and they are just as good and impressive, if just a little bit smaller.

We have two above the fence, two that didn’t really do anything, and the rest that are fine.  Two have now finished flowering.   The smaller ones in the front garden are starting to flower and their different appearance (ie not just plain yellow) will make an interesting display once they are all out.

We have a second flower showing now!  But the dude that is second from the right is still growing and above the fence with no signs yet of a flower appearing.  The two small ones in the middle I don’t know why they have not grown much more than they have.  Why do sunflowers do that I wonder?
