Gardeners World Lavender Potted Outside

STeve @ 4:44 pm

I have been meaning to pot these outside for weeks now, each morning they were looking a little worse from the day before.  Since coming via the post they have been in small pots on the window sill.   It really wasn’t a nice day to be doing this, rain and wind and cold - so we did it quickly in a couple of big pots that we got from freecycle a couple of months before.   This won’t be their final destination, but they should like it outside in a bigger pot for a while.    We added a lot of old shingle from the driveway which over the months/years of it sitting in a bag has mixed with soil and now is quite a nice free draining base for these plants.

w17 Lavender cuttings keep going

STeve @ 3:57 pm

These are my own little babies!   Out of I think five pots, we now have two left, each containing around four cutting each.  I decided to leave them together and so really it looks like just two.  It was a bit hit and miss, but I see new growth heading towards the daylight.  This is since they were moved outside.   I took the cuttings back in September 2007 and so the remaining ones have come a long way.  Maybe I will do some more, using the knowledge I have gained from these ones - although I do think we have quite enough lavender now.  Saying that… the lavender hedge in the back garden looks old and woody so maybe new cuttings could be used to replace that in a number of years……

New Lavenders from Gardener’s World

STeve @ 8:56 pm

I sent off for these from the BBC Gardener’s World which were free of charge with the magaine (I just paid P&P).   They arrived by post and I have potted them up and kept them in doors.   I will prepare some ground in the front garden for them.

Lavender and the Bee

STeve @ 8:24 pm

Why does the wind decide to blow when you are trying to get a close up of a bumble bee on lavender.  Well, this is the best I could do for today.

Lavender looking good

STeve @ 9:25 pm

This is in the front garden by the door.  An interesting story here as it was a lavender plant that used to be in the back garden where the decking is now.  I dug it up and stuck it in the front which at that time was just a bit of earth by the door.  Now it makes up part of the flower bed and I am happy with how it has taken and grown.   Once the flowers have seen their best I will prune the bush into a mini hedge shape again.

Lavender - the Parents

STeve @ 10:31 pm

Following the success in the lavender cuttings, here are their parents - all looking good and ready to flower in the next weeks.  Hoping no more children fall into them, their cars seem to crash quite often.  The plan is to build using some old pallet wood a bit of a frame.

Lavender Cuttings Planted Outside

STeve @ 10:21 pm

Back in September I decided to have a go at taking lavender cuttings and I am pleased today as I have planted the first lot in a bigger pot outside - ready at sometime to be planted fully in the garden.    I have four pots altogether and I put in four cuttings each.  Two pots still have all four, another has three, while the last one just has one.   The success rate for taking cuttings is not meant to be too high hence the reason for doing so many, so I am pretty chuffed at the results.   When I get more pots I will plant out the others.

Lavender Cuttings

DSC00074 DSC00075

A bit of an experiment as we have never done anything like this before. I was thinking how we needed some young lavender plants to replace some of the older woody ones that we have and worried about how much it would all cost when I though how silly, we have all we need and it’s free! So we took a number of cuttings, pulled off the bottom leaves, dipped in rooting powder and they are now on an east facing window.

In six to eight weeks time we will see, hopefully at least some of these will root and we will have some new lavender plants for next year.
