BBC Gardener’s World Passion

Another BBC Gardener’s World free offer here, one that I sent off for months and months ago and had forgot all about when they arrived.   I kept them watered and on the window sill for a couple of days until I was able to pot them outside.   They will stay like this for a some months in order to get a bigger rootball and be more suited for the outside.

These are, from left to right in the first photo (from right to left in the second!) - Caerulea, Constance Elliot, X Violacea.   Caerulea we have had before in our old garden and it comes and goes over the year.  The other two are no where near as hardy and so we shall see how they go.  It is suggested to put them in pots so that you can bring them indoors or a conservatory during the colder times, but really we don’t have room for any of that.   So in theory they should just die away in the winter and pop back up during the spring.  The biggest thing is to survive their first year and so I have put them under cloches (plastic bottles with the ends cut off!).

Sunflowers in the front still looking good

STeve @ 10:26 pm

Early October and the sunflowers in the front are still looking good.  Just as you think it has all finished another load of flower heads come up.  These sunflowers have flowered over and over again, multi-headed and fantastic little things.   I hope I can save some seed for next year.

Gardeners World Lavender Potted Outside

STeve @ 4:44 pm

I have been meaning to pot these outside for weeks now, each morning they were looking a little worse from the day before.  Since coming via the post they have been in small pots on the window sill.   It really wasn’t a nice day to be doing this, rain and wind and cold - so we did it quickly in a couple of big pots that we got from freecycle a couple of months before.   This won’t be their final destination, but they should like it outside in a bigger pot for a while.    We added a lot of old shingle from the driveway which over the months/years of it sitting in a bag has mixed with soil and now is quite a nice free draining base for these plants.
